A significant part of the mission of the Alice Paul Institute (API) is voting rights. The non-profit organization was founded to honor the life’s work of suffragist and civil rights activist Alice Paul, an instrumental force in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. API is also a leadership development institute with many programs for teens and young girls.
In my role as Marketing & Civic Engagement Director I led our social media strategy. I was increasingly concerned about low voter turnout from young voters, specifically the primaries leading the to the November 2020 national election. We had an amazing group of college interns in the fall of 2020 that were fired up to help promote voting amongst their peers. I worked with them to develop the #VOTER meme campaign specifically for the organization’s Instagram platform.
Working from memes that were popular at the time, we added levity to our Instagram feed and gained new followers during this campaign. I knew we had created a meaningful campaign when one our long-time donors dropped me an email to tell me how much she loved them.
