We Were First.

The history of women and their accomplishments is woefully underwritten. In my role as Outreach & Civic Engagement Director at Alice Paul Institute (API), I built API’s social strategy around a central theme: bring the diversity of women’s history into the daily lives of the organization’s followers with a deep focus on inclusion.

The #WeWereFirst campaign celebrated the historic “firsts” of women in politics. The campaign featured the stories of the first women to run on a presidential ticket, be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, be elected to the United States Congress, and much more. Working with Erica, a wonderful college intern, we designed this project highlight the diversity of women in political history. The campaign ran in November of 2020 as a method to inspire voters to support female and diverse candidates in that election cycle. We concluded the campaign by celebrating the historic wins by women in the 2020 election cycle, including those who won in state and local races.

The #WeWereFirst posts were immediately popular with very high engagement rates demonstrated in the high number of likes and comments on Instagram and shares on Facebook.
